Daryl Marr is our ‘Sparky of The Month’.
Daryl Marr of Marr Imperium Ltd in Scotland speaks to Zano about his experience as an electrician, the inspiration behind his career and the challenges he has faced in the short period Marr Imperium Ltd has in action.
Name: Daryl Marr
Company: Marr Imperium Ltd
Location: Edinburgh, Scotland
Why did you become an electrician?
My Dad has been a self-employed electrician for over 55 years. I planned on getting a different trade to fall back on, but once I started making money as an electrician and saw how proud it made him, I knew it was the job for me.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I started my apprenticeship 16 years ago at Arthur Mckay's in Edinburgh, which saw me working on large scale projects for several years before moving into the maintenance and facilities management division. I was then promoted to project manager running multi-million pound projects for high profile clients.
I decided that I wanted to follow my dream of starting my own business and established Marr Imperium Ltd last year. I now like being my own boss. This allows me to work around my young family and have a better work/life balance. I am looking forward to seeing where my business grows, working with good customers and great forward-thinking suppliers like Zano.
What's the most interesting job you've completed to date?
When I was an electrical project manager in banking data centres, I was lucky enough to learn about and work with DRUPS and UPS systems, due to the importance of having no power cuts as this could potentially shut down all cash machines and banking transactions across Europe.
What are the biggest challenges you face day-to-day?
As I have not long started the business, I find it challenging working alone on bigger jobs. Also, parking in the city centre of Edinburgh, without picking up multiple parking tickets!
What services have been most in demand this year?
Before the hike in energy costs, it was car charging points. In Scotland it was also legislation to have interlinked smoke detection throughout domestic properties, so the demand for this at the start of the year was high.
Fun fact about you?
If I wasn't an electrician I planned to be a ski instructor! Either way, they were both the wrong choice for my knees.
How did you find out about Zano Controls?
Why do you choose Zano products/what's your go-to product?
Zano's dimming range/variants are superb. The biggest plus for me however, is no humming or loss of efficiency through noise which you get from traditional dimmers.
What's the biggest LED dimming problem you've faced?
Flickering, followed by noise (but not with Zano products!).
If you could rewire anyone's house, who would it be?
Elon Musk - because I think he could learn a thing or two from me.
